Street Connected Children
Every child deserves a place to call home
For many children in Uganda, life on the streets is not a choice. Poverty, abuse, neglect, family breakdown and the loss of parents or caregivers can leave children with nowhere safe to turn.
Some children leave home to escape violence or mistreatment. Others are separated from their families or pushed onto the streets by circumstances beyond their control. Whatever brought them there, every child deserves safety, care and the opportunity for a better future.
Life on the streets
Children living on the streets face enormous challenges every day. Without the protection of a safe home, they are vulnerable to violence, sexual abuse, exploitation, hunger and illness.
Many have little or no access to education, healthcare or basic necessities. Some turn to drugs or other substances to cope with hunger, fear and the harsh realities of street life. Children can also face discrimination, harassment and violence from the communities around them.
Behind every child on the street is an individual story. These are children with hopes, dreams and potential, just like any other child.
Helping children find their way home
Getting a child off the streets is only the beginning. Without ongoing support, children can find themselves returning to the same circumstances they left behind. Our vision is to partner with local organisations in Uganda that are already rescuing and caring for children living on the streets.
By working alongside these organisations and qualified social workers, we hope to help children reconnect with their families where it is safe to do so, or find suitable alternative family care when returning home is not possible.
Every child's circumstances are different. Careful assessment, safeguarding and the child's best interests must guide decisions about their future. We believe children belong in families, not institutions, and that finding a safe home is only the beginning of helping them build a better future.
Supporting children beyond the streets
For children returning to family care, ongoing support can make all the difference. Families may be struggling with poverty, unemployment, housing insecurity or other challenges that make caring for their children difficult.
Through education, practical assistance and small business opportunities, we work alongside vulnerable families to help them provide for their children and stay together. Our goal is to help children remain safely at home, continue their education and have the opportunity to thrive within their families.
Our journey
Our journey began through street outreach in Bwyaise, where we witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by children living without safe family care. Those experiences shaped our commitment to street connected children and helped us understand that rescue alone is not enough.
While we are not currently running street outreach programs, our commitment to these children remains. As we develop future partnerships with local organisations and social workers, we continue supporting vulnerable children and families through our existing programs.
We hope to build on this work by helping more children find safe family care and ensuring they have the support they need long after leaving the streets.
Every child matters
No child should have to grow up on the streets.
Every child deserves protection from abuse and exploitation, access to education and the opportunity to grow up in a safe and caring family.
We want to see children not only leave the streets, but have somewhere they truly belong.
Uganda has one of the largest populations of young people in the world, with over 56% of its population under the age of 18. Children are the single largest demographic group living in poverty in Uganda.
